(ATR) Krasnoyarsk, a Russian city in the heart of Siberia plays host to the 2019 Winter Universiade.

The biennial Winter University Games was opened by Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin on March 2.

It is the first multi-sport event to come to Russia after the revelations from the ongoing Russian doping scandal. Russia last hosted a Universiade in 2013 in Kazan, which investigators say was a test-case for the doping scheme employed at Sochi 2014.

Athletes from 50 countries ventured to Krasnoyarsk to compete in the Games, which feature 11 sports and 3600 athletes. Olympic stalwart sports such as alpine skiing, figure skating and ice hockey are being played alongside sports such as bandy and ski-orienteering.
