The ISAF Council is responsible for deciding the events and equipment used at the Olympic Sailing Competition. The same slate is then used at the ISAF Sailing World Championships and ISAF Sailing World Cup.
At the ISAF Annual Conference in 2010 new Regulations were approved defining the process and time scales for making those selections. One year later six of the ten events were confirmed with evaluations pending for the equipment of the mixed multihull, women’s skiff and the men’s and women’s board events.
Evaluation trials took place in March 2012 in advance of the next Council meeting. At the ISAF Mid-Year Meeting in Stresa, Italy Council voted to include the Nacra17, the 49erFX and men’s and women’s kiteboarding.
For the 2012 Annual Conference, 23 submissions have been received by ISAF to re-open the discussion about the events and equipment for 2016 and these will be discussed by the expert committees before recommendations are made to Council on 9 November.
The Olympic events and equipment are defined in Regulation 23.1.4 and it is also defined that Council can only make changes to this Regulation and the timeframes detailed in Regulation 23.1.3 if at least 75% of votes cast are in favour of a motion to do so. If this 75% is not reached then the Events and Equipment confirmed by the ISAF Council in May 2012 will stand.
The final twist in the tail could be seen at the Annual General Meeting of the ISAF Member National Authorities on 10 November. The members present at the AGM review any Regulations made or amended in any substantive way by the Council since the last Ordinary Meeting which was in November 2011. As defined in the Articles of ISAF, decisions at the General Meeting shall be taken by a simple majority of votes of those present and entitled to vote.
2020 Olympic Sailing Competition
In accordance with ISAF Regulation 23.1.5, ISAF may decide that an event already selected for the next Olympic Sailing Competition is a "core event" and as such is also selected for the following Competition in eight years. Council may also select the current equipment to those core events and there are several submissions on the table regarding the selection of the Laser, Laser Radial, Finn and 470 for the 2020 Games.
