(ATR) The head of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has his eye on the next Asian Games.

In an interview with a radio station in the Philippines, POC president Jose Cojuangco said he wants to fill in for Vietnam as Asian Games host. In April, Vietnam withdrew from staging the 2019 Asian Games due to economic concerns.

The Philippines bid has one major problem: the deadline to submit a bid to the Olympic Council of Asia has passed. Indonesia is the only reported bid.

"First, I will have to clear it with the OCA president if bidding is still open," Cojuangco said.

"If the 2018 hosting has not yet been awarded to any country, then the Philippines will try to offer our bid." Manila would be the bid city.

In order to entice bids, the OCA said it would consider cities that want to stage the Games in 2018 or 2019.

If the Philippines were to win hosting rights for the 2018 Games, it would be the second time the country hosted the Games. Manila hosted the 1954 Asian Games.
