Between 4 to 5 out of 10 people who suffered the emotional impact and stress after suffering from COVID-19, have experienced hair loss, EsSalud reported with regard to what was registered in the medical consultations of its dermatology department.

The attending physician of the Dermatology Service of the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen National Hospital, Favio García Mendoza, said that, according to studies, around 60% of women can report hair loss while only 20% of men have the same problem.

CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS

This is due, according to the specialist, to episodes of systemic fever or inflammation caused by COVID-19. At this stage, the hairs would enter a higher than usual shedding phase as part of the alteration of the hair growth cycle over a period of time.

Another factor that contributes to hair loss is the emotional impact and stress generated by the situation of uncertainty we are experiencing in the face of the pandemic, which has a similar effect with the increase of this pathology,” García Mendoza told the Andean Agency.

The dermatologist pointed out that hair loss associated with the stress of the pandemic does have a cure and the patient, after a temporary process, can recover their total hair in a period between 4 to 6 months.

In addition, the specialist recalled that it is normal for about 100 hairs to fall out every day, which happens more while combing or bathing. However, he indicated that, if we see an increase in the volume of hair that we lose daily, or some areas totally without hair, it is important to go to the dermatologist.

To prevent hair loss due to these causes, García Mendoza recommended doing activities that make us release stress and strengthen our mental health. A balanced diet with the necessary supply of nutrients for hair metabolism is also important.

Finally, he recommended observing if there is another manifestation of peeling, redness or burning sensation that could be generated by causes other than that generated by COVID-19.

STATE OF EMERGENCY UNTIL MAY 31

On the other hand, last Saturday, it was announced that the led Government ordered the extension of the state of national emergency for a period of 31 days due to the pandemic and the new provisions which will be in effect from May.

In this regard, Supreme Decree No. 041-2022-PCM establishes that this measure enters into force as of Sunday, May 1, 2022, whose validity will be extended until the 31st of the same month.

This modification is due to the recent announcement by the Ministry of Health, which states that, as of May, the optional use of the mask will be allowed in public places, complying with certain regulations.

The D.S. also indicates that civilian servants vaccinated against COVID-19 must return to face-to-face work. Those with risk factors will perform remote or mixed work.

“In the case of private activity service providers who do not have the application of the three doses of vaccination against covid-19, they must provide services through the modality of remote work,” the decree states.
