According to Nietzsche's assumption that every ethical-moral phenomenon expresses the will to power, which is relevant to political power, even if this is an interpretation related to a certain vision of man about the world, it is wise to leave that point to faith and religion; therefore, without focusing on the moral and referring to ethics in relation to power, facts show that things have always been the same with respect to weak states, Russia's invasion of Ukraine ratifies it.
When in October 1935, without prior ultimatum or declaration of war, dictator Benito Mussolini invaded Abyssinia with the fanciful ambition of resurrecting the Roman Empire, the League of Nations and the world remained silent, looked elsewhere and accepted the massacre as an inevitable event. Similarly, when on March 15, 1939, after Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany invaded and occupied the Czech provinces of Bohemia and Moravia - and what remained of the collapsed Czechoslovak state - in flagrant violation of the Munich Pact signed in 1938, the way for the Nazi machine to continue towards Poland was paved. Thus, the Nazis annihilated the Polish armed forces. Then, albeit late, the world understood that Hitler had to be stopped after he massacred the Polish people and burned that country.
Years later, in October 1956, Hungarian students confronted Soviet tanks with stones, which crushed their claim to freedom with blood and fire. In August 1968, Warsaw Pact troops annihilated and bled out the Prague Spring. In both cases, the UN, rarely energetic in defending the weak and heir to the failed League of Nations, did not give its full support to those fighting for freedom. Hence, none of the current military events in Russia's invasion of Ukraine can be surprising. There is no doubt that officials and leaders who close their eyes and ears to the crimes of the strongest, often citing a convenient doctrine of non-intervention in the internal affairs of other states under the always reprehensible excuse that favors murderous conduct, should be tried alongside the perpetrators for what is still known. as a “free world”.
In such a scenario, without assigning to history the place of the judge, considering that she has always been misappropriated and constructed by the story of the victors, the example of resistance by all means of Ukrainian citizens seeks to shed light on their struggle for freedom and the need for crimes and violations of the right to war will be definitively tried and its perpetrators brought to justice. This is the only way to avoid naturalizing violations of the human and political rights of peoples.
However, considering the current state of affairs - except for a miracle - President Volodymyr Zelensky's forces will not be able to be imposed on Russian invaders without extensive assistance. The Russian high command knows that Zelensky can only delay his goal of taking Ukraine for a few weeks and that Ukrainian resistance will hardly change the course of the war. The analyses that many military experts give to the press that Putin cannot win are nothing more than a way of projecting the historical guilt - real or imaginary - that accompany the Western mentality but which will not be able to neutralize Russia's military strategy of taking over Ukraine beyond the courageous resistance that is being observed.
However, the world is facing the most serious scenario of the Russian military worldview, which does not rule out the use of tactical nuclear weapons if necessary to its strategic interests. Thus, in the face of an increase in NATO logistical support to Ukraine with the shipment of more modern weapons systems, Russia could deepen its military actions without respecting ethical red lines, which would make the war situation difficult to control if that happened. However, after two months of war and devastating bombardments on Ukrainian cities and towns, the West is not yet clear what Putin wants from Ukraine. But it is also not well known what the US administration, its allies in the North Atlantic Organization (NATO) or the partners of the European Union (EU) are aiming for. Very few seem to be clear about that, except the Ukrainians themselves who are the ones who today - and as is always the case in these situations - continue to contribute their deaths.
On this complex international board, it is clear that the Russian invasion of Ukraine amounts to a fierce tsunami for the members of the EU and NATO. The war that the West considers to be the worst global misfortune and Europeans claimed was part of the distant past is now back and seems uncontrollable given the behavior of Vladimir Putin. The difference is that the Russian leader does know where he intends to go and has shown it to the world retracing the path of the destruction of little Ukraine. Meanwhile, the West showed nothing beating its well-known diplomatic “tolerance”, that is, the application of economic sanctions along with a handful of empty emotions in the face of the devastating Russian military operation on Ukrainian soil.
The fact is that when a few of us warned that Moscow would attack Ukraine, neither Brussels nor Washington believed that Putin would dare to do so; perhaps because it was good to show the calm and majority discourse that he was not going to do so, or perhaps because European and American intelligence agencies failed. But if the invasion did not happen, Washington and Brussels would welcome their victory and have stopped Putin's plans - finally implemented -. Even so, when Moscow's military forces entered Ukrainian soil and the invasion was a fait accompli, the world power centers thought it would all be a matter of a few hours before Kiev surrendered given the military superiority and operational capability of the Russian army. This was a grave error of judgment that gave rise to meaningless rhetoric believing that the conflict would end quickly. However, when Ukrainians began their fierce resistance and Putin's forces stagnated in the first 20 days of the crisis and were unable to advance overwhelmingly as was thought to happen, it moved to another stage of the conflict where questions were left unanswered. Then a sector of public opinion began to wonder what happened to Vladimir Putin and his forces that were not achieving a quick victory. Thus, as the resistance of Ukrainians spread, all the promises made would have to be fulfilled to help Ukraine, which gave rise to a problem for NATO, Brussels and Washington, who were caught up in their words.
Consequently, until the first Russian retreat, what the West exhibited in a “politically correct” way was that it would unite to defeat Putin; showing that NATO was what it always claimed to be: the military body of continental defense; and the EU had to stop being a pacifist body to become - together with Washington - a supplier of armament to the Ukrainians. In particular, reality changed the position of the international community and shattered the myth of a peaceful world that was focused and working on major technological advances, the medicinal industry and multilateral businesses for the benefit of global society to brutally show us that this world was not a dream place, that violence and barbarism underlie it and that being weak is not useful for states to demand respect for their democracy, freedom and sovereignty.
However, the stimulus of propaganda always driven by ideology continues to take a deep toll on public opinion, so much so that it raises the question of whether everything that is read about Ukraine is true or not and what we are going through is a parallel reality created by that same propaganda typical of all wars. So many wonder how it is possible that the United States, NATO or the EU failed to convince Putin to set aside his plan to invade Ukraine. But what is concrete is that despite the images of Russian tanks burned and detained outside Kiev in the first 15 days of war, Moscow troops have resumed their invasion with a devastating advance, Mariupol considered a bastion of the resistance has fallen in recent hours, the Saltivka district in Kharkiv ran the same luck, like Borodyanka on the outskirts of Kiev and nothing seems to stop Putin's political and military objective, which is none other than the seizure of the capital and the removal of President Zelensky. In order to achieve this, it seeks to break the resistance and the Ukrainian population through the massive destruction that is observed along with many crimes against civilians that the Russians leave in their wake, which already constitute an undoubted evidentiary plexus for the opening of an investigation into war crimes and violations of legal norms.
This brutal way of leading the war by Putin is criticized by the West for not being civilized, meanwhile more mass graves of civilian casualties are being discovered every day. However, the Russian leader has not lost his sleep nor does he notice what Brussels or Washington says, he knows that the West will not stand in the way of his objectives and shows his willingness to continue the task.
