The Ukrainian government has claimed that the four-day “humanitarian pause” proposed by UN Secretary General António Guterres as “necessary” for clashes to cease coinciding with Orthodox Easter, and urged Russian forces to also accept a ceasefire.

Kiev believes that this truce is essential for civilians to leave some of the areas besieged by Moscow troops, including the city of Mariupol, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

The ministry led by Dimitro Kuleba hopes that Russia will also allow the protection of civilians and the distribution of humanitarian aid, an aspect in which he thanked the readiness of the UN, expressed loud on Tuesday by Guterres.

Kiev has also called on Moscow to end “immediately” blockades in cities such as Mariupol, which complicate the humanitarian situation and make evacuation work difficult.

The head of the UN has renewed his call for an end to fighting in Ukraine by taking advantage of Orthodox Easter and has proposed a four-day truce — from Thursday to Sunday — fearing that the conflict will be even “more violent, bloody and destructive” in the coming days.

Guterres lamented that Easter is celebrated this year “under the cloud of war” which represents a “total denial” of the messages traditionally at this time.

On Monday night, Russia launched dozens of air strikes in eastern Ukraine, opening a new phase of the bloody conflict with fighting in the Donbas region.

The Ukrainian armed forces confirmed the increase in fighting in the east of the country, after President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia had launched the long-awaited offensive in the Donbas region, the industrial heart of Ukraine.

The Russian military campaign refocuses on Donbas — an area that pro-Moscow separatists have partially controlled since 2014 — after their efforts to capture the capital, Kiev, were thwarted.
