Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Wednesday minimized the doubts that the Armed Forces purchase of viagra and penile prostheses has aroused in the opposition and affirmed that “nothing” is irregular in the whole matter.
Those operations of the Armed Forces, authorized by the Ministry of Defence, were revealed this week by the socialist deputy Elias Vaz, who detected them in a review of official documents on the management of military budgets.
Vaz said he was surprised to discover that purchases for Armed Forces hospitals included 35,000 viagra tablets and 60 penile prostheses, and requested that auditing agencies investigate the matter and demand an explanation from the Government.
The Ministry of Defense has said that Sildenafila, the active substance in viagra, was purchased to treat cases of pulmonary arterial hypertension, a rare disease that mainly affects women.
Bolsonaro, who had not yet spoken on the matter, reinforced that explanation during a meeting he held this Wednesday with legislators and pastors of evangelist churches, in which he stated that there is “nothing” illegal about these purchases.
“The Armed Forces buy viagra to combat high blood pressure and some rheumatological diseases” and “with all due respect, it's nothing,” said the president, who noted however that “this is obviously much more used by inactive personnel and pensioners” of the Army, Air Force and Navy.
Bolsonaro encompassed the suspicions generated by these purchases in the “persecution” he claims to suffer from his political opponents and the local press.
“We are criticized every day by a press that has a lot of bad faith and is ignorant about many issues,” added the leader of the far right, who is also captain of the Army reserve and has led the military to positions of power in all areas of his government.
Deputy Vaz of the Socialist Party has nevertheless insisted that the Government should officially explain these purchases, made with public money, and has insisted that the Court of Auditors, the State's auditing body, investigate whether there is any kind of irregularity in such operations.
