Millions of tons of sargassum are coming to the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean, mainly in the state of Quintana Roo. As reported by the entity's Sargassum Monitoring Network, up to 41 beaches are kept at red light due to the excessive presence of the alga, six with abundant, ten with moderate, 19 with very low and barely four without it.

According to the most recent update of the map that the organization generates, the coasts of the municipalities of Tulum, Solidaridad, Puerto Morelos and Benito Juárez are the most affected, as the largest number of beaches with sargassum are concentrated on them. The eastern side of the island of Cozumel is also a victim of the arrival of the Brown Tide, as it has also been called.

At a press conference, the mayor of the municipality of Solidaridad, Lili Campos, called on the population to carry out work to harvest the algae and accused climatic conditions of preventing the work of boats and other measures to prevent it from reaching the shores.

“As a result of the cold front, the weather has not allowed the barriers to be installed as far as our beaches are concerned. For that reason, the recale is very complete, it comes directly, because there are no barriers that allow the sargassum to be lifted from the sea,” said the official.

The damage is due to the arrival of the Easter holiday period, where according to the director of the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo, Darío Flota Ocampo, the estimated hotel occupancy for the period from 11 to 24 will be 90% in most of the state, especially in the northeast and eastern regions, where destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel and Holbox are located.

Under the slogan of “Not every day, not every beach”, the state government has dedicated itself to promoting the arrival of tourism to the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean. From Governor Carlos Joaquín González, to the entity's Secretariat of Tourism. In addition, the authorities present an official report on the situation that results in the configuration of their own map and traffic light.

In a press release cut until April 4, the government assured that according to current and wind models, large quantities of sargassum are expected to continue to arrive along the coast of Quintana Roo over the next few days. He announced that the alert level for the estimation of recales remains in the category of “excessive” since some beaches accumulate algae mounds of more than 90 cm in less than 24 hours.

Sargassum is a brown macroalgae of the genus Sargassum. It can be seen floating on the surface of the ocean and is mainly divided into two species: S. natans and S. fluitans. It serves as an important habitat for many marine species, providing food, shade and shelter for fish, shrimp, crabs and turtles.
