After the expulsion of the invading troops in Irpin that had taken control of the city, Ukrainian forces toured the chilling devastation left by the Russian attacks, which still continue with explosions in the area, outside Kiev.
The mayor of Irpin, Oleksandr Markushin, said that some 300 civilians were killed during the offensive of Russian troops on the outskirts of Kiev, where some fifty Ukrainian soldiers were also killed in the fighting.
“There is still no exact information on the number of civilians killed in Irpin, but the approximate figure is about three hundred people. Many are buried in yards and parks, others are still under the rubble,” the mayor said at a press conference in Kiev.
About 50% of the city has been destroyed, said Markushin, who referred to Irpin as a “heroic town that has prevented enemies from entering Kiev.”
The mayor assured that Irpin is already 100% under the control of the Ukrainian Army, but that it is necessary to clean up the debris and remnants of explosive devices so that its inhabitants can return, something he estimated could happen in a month.

Some 300 people were able to be evacuated from the city, but more than 3,500 civilians failed to leave because of the virulence of the Russian attacks. The suburb attracted attention after photographs circulated of the bodies of a mother and her two children who died during an attack while trying to escape. Their bodies were laid on the pavement with luggage and a pet carrier box next to them.
Although Irpin has been recovered by Ukrainian troops, Markushin noted that the territory is still being bombed from the neighboring Russian-occupied cities of Bucha, Gostomel and Vorzel.
According to the mayor, during the siege “Russian tanks crushed the bodies of dead residents and mocked women.”

According to testimonies from survivors who were trapped in Irpin, Russian soldiers undressed civilians and kept them in basements for days, separated families and mistreated women, the mayor said.
“They shot those who just didn't like them,” added Markushin, who spoke of war crimes.
The Ukrainian army has also regained control of a strategic highway in the east of the country, reporters from the AFP agency found. “There are Russian corpses scattered everywhere,” a Ukrainian intelligence officer told AFP, stating that “Russian soldiers were exhausted.”
