The American band Foo Fighters announced on Tuesday the cancellation of all scheduled dates of their tour “in the face of the disconcerting loss of our brother Taylor Hawkins”.

Hawkins, the 50-year-old drummer of the Grammy-winning rock group, died on the weekend in a Bogotá hotel shortly before the band performed at the Stereo Picnic Festival, on the outskirts of the city.

“We feel and share the disappointment of not seeing each other as planned,” the band wrote in a statement published on social media. “Let's take this time to mourn, to heal, to get closer to our loved ones and to appreciate all the music and memories we've made together.”

Preliminary toxicology tests determined that Hawkins had traces of drugs in his system, including opioids, but Colombian researchers did not specify whether the use of these substances caused his death.

As part of one of the most influential and critically acclaimed alternative rock bands, Hawkins was known for his charisma on stage and rhythms inspired by classic rock from legends such as Phil Collins and Queen's Roger Taylor.

Foo Fighters celebrated its 25th anniversary last year on a pandemic-delayed tour and had recently produced the film Studio 666.

The rockers were going to perform at the Grammys on Sunday in Las Vegas, and they also had dates scheduled at the Beale Street Festival; the New Orleans Jazz&Heritage Festival; Columbia, Maryland; Raleigh, North Carolina; Daytona Beach; Charlotte, North Carolina; the Boston Calling Festival, as well as dates in the summer in Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France and Great Britain.

Hawkins was a drummer on Alanis Morissette's tours and later joined Foo Fighters in 1997. He played on the band's most famous albums, including One by One and In Your Honor, as well as on their popular singles such as Best of You.

In his 2021 book The Storyteller, vocalist David Grohl called Hawkins his “brother from a different mother, my best friend, a man I would be shot by.”

“When we met, our bond was immediate, and we got closer with each day, every song, every note we played together,” wrote the singer. “We were absolutely destined, and I am grateful that we met in this life.”

This is the second time that Dave Grohl has faced the loss of a bandmate, following the suicide of Kurt Cobain of Nirvana.

After Grohl, Hawkins was the most recognizable member of the band and appeared alongside the singer in interviews, as well as taking a prominent role, usually comedic, in the group's memorable videos.

In addition, he played drums and sang in a personal side project, the trio Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders. They released an album, Get the Money, in 2006.
