Miami, 25 Mar A 25-year-old man was found guilty in federal court in Miami, in South Florida (USA), for robbing and shooting an Uber driver, who was shot point-blank in the head, the federal prosecutor's office reported Friday. Jorge Aponte Figueroa, a native of Miami, was convicted of the event that occurred in May 2017, in which the accused, along with two other accomplices, armed assault the Uber driver who was sleeping in a minivan. According to court documents, the assailants drove the victim's vehicle through Miami-Dade County, after which his wallet was stolen at gunpoint. Afterwards, “Aponte Figueroa shot the victim seven times, including several point-blank shots to the head” with a view to “preventing the victim from serving as a witness,” as explained in a statement by the Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida. A jury found the defendant guilty of one count of fatal car theft and another for firing a firearm with a view to promoting a crime of violence, in a trial chaired by federal judge Marcia Cooke. The sentencing date was set for June 15. Aponte Figueroa faces another criminal process in this judicial district for a series of robberies with violence. CHIEF lce/jip/lll
