Gas balloon should not cost more than 25 or 26 soles, according to OPECU

The agency urged the Government to convene a dialogue table with the main actors in the sector to establish the true price of LPG.

Guardar

The Peruvian Consumers and Users Agency (OPECU) noted that there is no reason why the price of the gas balloon is rising and has reached the high prices it currently maintains. In addition, he pointed out that this product should be in S/25 or 26 soles in Peru.

“This product should be costing 25 or 26 soles, not more than that kind of money,” said Hector Plate, OPECU spokesman, in an interview with RPP Noticias.

The representative argued that the price increase is inexplicable. He recalled that in 2011, the gas balloon cost approximately S/53 soles; but today it can cost S/75 soles in some areas of Lima.

It is inexplicable, ununderstandable, that this is happening with a product that is practically part of the family basket,” he said. In addition, he noted that 8 out of 10 families use this product for cooking.

PRICE SUBJECT TO THE INTERNATIONAL PANORAMA

Plate explained that although packaged LPG is a national product, “it has been subject to international prices for many years.”

“So the variations that are taking place in that context, including the geopolitical theme, such as what is happening in Ukraine, and other factors, affect the cost of the product as it is a petroleum derivative,” he explained.

In addition, he indicated that when this asset was incorporated into the Fuel Price Stabilization Fund, the export parity price was no longer considered, but the import price. This “makes the product much more expensive”.

DIALOGUE TABLE

The representative of OPECU urged the Government to convene a dialogue table with various actors in the sector, such as Pluspetrol and Camisea. This is to “establish the true price” of LPG.

“It is unjustifiable, it is unforgivable that, with the consent of the current Government, which has not defended the right to adequate protection of the economic interests of consumers, they keep the price of this raw material under the argument of referring it to the international price,” Plate lamented.
