They gave last farewell to the journalist, Sonia Elizabeth Morales Barrera

A couple of days ago, the news broke of the death of a journalist and professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) who spent 20 years teaching journalism to students of the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences.

Sonia Elizabeth Morales Barrera, was born in Guanajuato in 1957, graduated from the Communication Sciences degree at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, where years later she taught.

He started out in journalism with the support of Julio Scherer, who taught at this institution. Later, Scherer's deputy, Armando Ponce, coordinator of the cultural section of the seminar, encouraged her to work on the same project.

Some time later Morales Barrera joined the news agency (CISA), where he covered educational and university issues, and years later worked at the news agency (APRO).

In 1980 he published his first note entitled “None of the five paintings stolen from official institutions were insured”, a topic related to the theft of works of art at the San Carlos Museum. This publication was published in the newspaper Proceso, founded on November 6, 1976 by Julio Scherer García, Miguel Ángel Granados Chapa, Vicente Leñero and Armando Ponce.

In 2000, it was titled with the thesis From supplements to cultural information: Cultural journalism is not cultural dissemination. A space where she mentions several of her colleagues who taught her in cultural journalism. At the end of the academic document are the names of: Carmen Galindo, Humberto Batís, Armando Ponce, Eduardo Camacho, María Elena Matadamas, among others.

The UNAM professor since 2001, taught the subjects of Journalism Genres, Research Methodology and Journalism Workshop. During this period a teacher studied at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters (FFYL).

Through the social network Facebook was that his friend and colleague Gerardo Galarza Torres, also a journalist reporter and former co-director of Proceso, head of the Apro agency, and collaborator of the portal and the digital edition of Libre in the Public South the departure of his wife:

“To all family and friends: With infinite sadness and deep pain, the Galarza Morales: Claudia, Bernardo, Zoé and Bruno; Diana and Gerardo, and I inform you that Sonia Elizabet Morales Barrera, loving and beloved wife, mother and grandmother, has left for the Father's House.We all thank you for sharing and sharing our lives. To Sonia, thank you for making us so happy,” Galarza Torres published.

He also shared thanks for his support to family and friends of Sonia Elizabeth, who accompanied him moments after the journalist's death.

“On behalf of my entire family, I thank all the shows of affection, solidarity and support for the passing of our Sonia Elizabet Morales, including those of those friends we thought were lost on the intricate paths of life and who now became present. Everyone's words comfort us, comfort and relieve us. Thank you!”

On the other hand, UNAM also published its statement in which it regretted the death of the journalist

Students from the Faculty of Political Science through comments on social networks published their sadness at the death of the journalist, commented that she motivated them too much continue to learn journalism. They claimed that she was an excellent teacher and that they regret her departure.

He died last Sunday, March 13 in Celaya, Guanajuato, at the age of 64, however, his contributions continue and will continue to be valid as he was a great exponent of cultural journalism.
