COCA CROPS INCREASED BETWEEN 2016 AND 2020

The area of coca leaf crops in Peru increased by 41% between 2016 and 2020, despite the fact that during the same period some 113,000 hectares were eradicated, 3,873 maceration pools were intervened and more than 1,900 drug laboratories were destroyed, official sources reported Thursday.

The National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs (Devida) explained, in a statement, that during the period indicated, coca crops grew from 43,900 hectares to 61,700 hectares sown, with a reseeding of between 30% and 60%. He added that the coca leaf has spread and moved to Peru's border areas with Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil and Bolivia, “as a result of the growing global demand for cocaine.”

In this regard, Devida is promoting a commitment between the State and civil society in the Andean-Amazon region of Peru, “with reciprocal rights and duties, primarily with indigenous peoples and agricultural producers”.

The intention of a “Social Social Pact” is for peoples to “voluntarily reduce coca crops for illicit purposes in exchange for timely services on the part of the State, within the framework of the current National Drug Policy by 2030″.

“The legal coca leaf market is not only in a severe economic crisis, but it has lost control capacity,” he said, referring to the percentage of coca that is destined in Peru for the manufacture of mates, candies and other products, as well as to ancestral consumption known as “chacchado”.
