China reports 2,157 new local cases of covid-19

Beijing, 19 Mar The Chinese National Health Commission confirmed this Saturday the detection of 2,228 new positives for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus on the eve, 2,157 of them due to local contagion and the rest imported. The figure is slightly lower than that reported the previous day and also that of last Tuesday, when the Asian country registered 3,507 cases, the highest number since the first half of 2020. The provinces with the highest number of cases of community transmission were Jilin (northeast, 1,674), Fujian (southeast, 199), Liaoning (north-east, 69) and Canton (southeast, 47). Health authorities also today reported the detection of 1,823 asymptomatic cases, 1,713 of them local, although Beijing does not count them as confirmed cases unless they manifest symptoms. The remaining 71 infections, found among travelers from abroad, were detected in various regions of the country, most of them in Guangzhou and Shanghai, one of the main gateways to China, which has kept its borders practically closed since March 2020. The National Health Commission also detailed that, until last midnight local (16.00 GMT on Friday), 614 patients were discharged after successfully overcoming covid. The total number of active infected persons in mainland China is 18,586, 31 of them in serious condition. According to the institution's accounts, since the beginning of the pandemic 128,462 people were infected in the country and 4,638 died. To date, more than 1.9 million close contacts with infected persons have been monitored by medical follow-up, of which 296,513 remain under observation. CHIEF lcl/ics
