San Juan, Mar 17 Puerto Rico will host the 2022 Paddle Surfing World Championships of the International Surfing Association (ISA), which will be held in San Juan from October 28 to November 6 of this year. ISA President Fernando Aguerre announced this Thursday at a press conference the celebration of the event on the island, during an event in which he was accompanied by the executive director of the Tourism Company (CTPR), Carlos Mercado, and Richard Carrión, member of the International Olympic Committee. This is the first global competition that ISA will hold after 2 years of absence, 2020 and 2021, due to the pandemic. The choice of Puerto Rico reinforces the Caribbean region as a global destination for the practice of this sport. “Puerto Rico welcomes you to the ISA World StandUp Paddleboard Championship -WSUPPC- 2022 event. Over the years, it has been more than demonstrated that our island has a great history and sporting potential for local and international events,” said the governor, Pedro Pierluisi, also present. The Puerto Rican Chief Executive reported that this activity will generate an economic impact of about $5 million in the form of overnight stays and other expenses. The city of San Juan expects to welcome more than 400 athletes from 40 countries, in the ninth edition of this world championship. The ISA event is the world's leading paddle surf or SUP competition. The competitions in the paddle surf and SUP Racing specialties will take place in Laguna del Condado and San Juan Bay in San Juan, while the wave speciality will be held in front of El Escambrón beach, known as “La 8", in the capital. The executive director of the Tourism Company indicated that the investment of the entity he leads for this event is part of the strategy of identifying sports tourism opportunities and events that amplify Puerto Rico's economic and promotional benefits. Aguerre commented that Puerto Rico has been a place steeped in the culture of surfing and paddle surfing for a long time. “As the governing body of SUP at the Olympic level, the ISA is determined to build on major events like this to demonstrate the exceptional value of this sport as a potential Olympic discipline,” Aguerre added. The last edition of the WSUPPC, in 2019, held in El Salvador, welcomed 161 athletes from 27 countries. CHIEF arm/car
