On March 11, some Icelandic media reported that Andrés Manga Escobar was sentenced to two years in prison for sexual abuse, news that was echoed in Colombia, and this Monday, three days later, the footballer gave his version of the events, assuring that he is being told of a crime that he didn't commit.
The player signed by Leiknir Reykjavík in March 2021, who has not had minutes of play since September of the same year due to the investigation being carried out against him, asked for help with the prosecution and claimed that with the woman who reported him he had sexual relations with consent. In addition, he denied that he was in jail.
In conversation with Win Sports' Primer Toque program, the footballer who dazzled in Deportivo Cali, Deportes Tolima and Atlético Nacional, among others, but who in none of them was consolidated by acts of indiscipline, commented:
Later, the footballer said that they had talked to the person who denounced him today days before the consensual sexual encounter and that after meeting in the city center, he invited her to dinner at his apartment where “what must happen between two adults happened”. After that, it was what he thought was a nightmare.
“The next day I saw her jacket on the floor and wrote to her that she had stuck. She told me that mom and dad were going for the jacket, that made me strange. However, I left my jacket in the lobby and didn't answer anymore, but after a while the police arrived. She told a friend that she didn't remember much and the friend told her that if it was rape, then she filed the complaint,” he said.
Manga also said that he responded to the police interrogation after he arrived at his place of residence and that the authorities withheld his passport. And he complained, among others, that the judge dismissed the evidence that the deputy in his defense.
What local media Fréttablaðið assured, which contrasts with the player's version, is that the Prosecutor's Office established that Manga “had discussions and sexual relations, without consent. He took advantage of her, who could not resist the act because of drunkenness.” Therefore, the judge's decision to sentence him to pay two and a half years in prison in the Icelandic capital, appealed by the defence of the player, who since his arrival at Leiknir Reykjavík scored two goals.
