(ATR) An official with the Hellenic Olympic Committee tells Around the Rings that two of Greece?s best-known Olympians have missed scheduled drug tests and could be off the team.
Defending 200m Olympic champion Costas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou, Sydney silver medalist in the 100m, were both supposed to be tested in the Olympic Village Thursday evening.
The International Olympic Committee, which has jurisdiction over drug testing at the Olympics, is expected to be issuing a statement within hours on the status of the two sprinters.
According to IOC rules, the athletes could face ejection from the team.
But one report says that the missed testing is the result of a communications breakdown between Greek team officials and that the two athletes will be given 24 hours to submit to tests.
If Kenteris and Thanou are cut from the team, the story may come close to overshadowing tonight?s opening ceremony for the 2004 Games.
