In less than two years the world’s top marathon runners will take to the streets of Paris, hoping their journey ends in gold.

Organizers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games released the route of the Olympic Marathon Wednesday, a route that will go past many of Paris’ most iconic landmarks.

It will begin at the Hotel de Ville, go along the Seine River, travel out to Versailles before runners turn around and head back to the finish line at the Esplanade des Invalides. The course will visit nine Parisian communities in all: Paris, Boulogne-Billancourt, Sevres, Ville D’Avray, Versailles, Viroflay, Chaville, Meudon and Issy-Les-Moulineaux.

“The Paris 2024 Olympic Marathon will be a festive and remarkable moment in history,” said Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. “From the City Hall to Versailles, runners will be celebrated and cheered as they follow in the footsteps of the women who set out on October 5, 1789 to express their anger to the King.”

Indeed the route was inspired by the Women’s March of 1789, as organizers said the course pays tribute to those who made France the country of human rights, and defended the values of humanity and freedom.

“The route, along with its historical foundations, also reflects our desire to bring sport to the heart of the city,” said organizers during the unveiling of the route.

While past Olympic marathon routes may have been relatively flat to encourage faster times, that won’t be the case in 2024.

The course in Paris will vary in elevation from a low point of 27 meters at the 14.2 km mark, to a high point of 183 meters at the 20.3 km mark. The race will gain 438 meters in elevation, and then descend 436 meters as racers near the finish line.

“It is a tough course with significant climbs,” said Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet.

In a statement, two-time Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Eliud Kipchoge said, “The Paris 2024 marathon will have something special about it. To perform in such an impressive setting, in a place so charged with history and symbolism, will be a unique experience. I could not ask for a more perfect race for the Games.”

The Paris 2024 Olympic Marathons will be held August 10 and 11, 2024. The men’s race will be August 10, and the women’s the following day.
