Off the back of a record Rugby World Cup 2015 and the massive growth in rugby sevens since the Olympic Games, World Rugby is inviting individuals and companies to pitch their ideas on how fan engagement and technology can be used to make World Rugby tournaments even better.

Announced at the World Rugby Conference and Exhibition (#WorldRugbyConfex) in London on Monday, the new competition will see the entries whittled down to a shortlist that will be presented to the governing body in early 2017.

World Rugby Head of Commercial, Broadcast and Marketing Murray Barnett said: "With technology playing a huge part in the area of fan engagement and interaction, we're inviting individuals and companies to pitch their ideas to us about how they can make a difference.

"From Rugby World Cup to the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, at home or in-stadia, fans are at the heart of the action, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what good ideas are out there and what we can use at our different events."

The initial submission should be a document of approximately 5,000 words in the following sections:

1. Executive summary

2. Unique difference from what's currently in the market place

3. Fundamentals of operation

4. Estimate cost for implementation in a 50,000-seater stadium or surrounding area

5. Assumptions and other requirements that are necessary for its successful operation.

Candidates can also supply a link to a video demonstration as part of the submission.

After an initial review of submissions, the two most successful candidates will be invited to attend a final judging round in early 2017, where they will have the opportunity to demonstrate their idea in front of a number of senior executives from World Rugby.

The winner will receive a prize of $10,718and the possibility of showcasing their product at one World Rugby's future events.
