Two Years to Winter Paralympics
VANOC celebrated the two-year countdown to the 2010 Winter Paralympics by holding an impromptu cupcake party outside the Vancouver Art Gallery on March 12.
Mascots Sumi, Miga and Quatchi joined VANOC CEO John Furlong in the event, which was publicized just over an hour before it began.
VANOC released the schedulefor the Games, which begin with the B.C. Place Stadium opening ceremony. Nine days of competition include snow events in the Callaghan Valley and at Whistler Creekside.
Ice events are at UBC Winter Sports Centre and Nat Bailey/Hillcrest Curling Centre. The closing ceremony is in Whistler on March 21, 2010.
The International Paralympic Committee, meanwhile, is worried about the high cost of Whistler Village hotel rooms. Canadian Paralympic Committee president Carla Qualtrough said IPC officials, guests and friends and family of athletes may have to commute daily from Vancouver to save money.
Furlong sayshis committeeis working to find a solution.
Dobell Pleads Guilty, Stays on VANOC Board
VANOC director Ken Dobell has stepped aside temporarily from his post as a lay bencher with the British Columbia Law Society, but he's staying put on the Vancouver 2010 board.
Dobell pleaded guilty Wednesday in provincial court in Vancouver to acting as an unregistered lobbyist. Judge Joseph Galati reserved his sentencing decision.
Dobell has enjoyed a long working relationship with Premier Gordon Campbell, dating back to the early 1990s when Campbell was Vancouver mayor and Dobell the city manager.
"It takes a classy individual to admit it when he makes a mistake, and he has," VANOC CEO John Furlong said. "He’s a star member of our board, a great contributor and he’s done extraordinary work for us and he will continue to do that."
