(ATR) Executive committee members, including the president, will no longer be able to serve more than three terms in the Union of European Football Associations.
The term limits are part of a broader reform package updating the UEFA statues at the body’s congress in Helsinki. Many of the statues had been in place since last July, but are now being applied for the election of the UEFA Executive Committee members.
Zbigniew Boniak of Poland, John Delaney of Ireland, Reinhard Grindel of Germany, Karl-Erik Nilsson of Sweden, Michele Uva of Italy and Servet Yardimci of Turkey were elected to the executive council in Helsinki for the first time. The six new members were joined by David Gill of England and Michael van Praag of the Netherlands, who were re-elected.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin was joined by FIFA president Gianni Infantino at the congress. Infantino was secretary general of UEFA before being elected FIFA president. Ceferin was elected last year after previous president Michel Platini was implicated in the FIFA corruption scandal.
At the congress, Infantino spoke of greater cooperation between UEFA and FIFA, after relations had cooled under previous FIFA President Sepp Blatter.
"This stupid rivalry between UEFA and FIFA does not exist anymore and does not have to exist," Infantino said.

Chinese Surfers to Debut at World Surfing Games
Chinese surfers will ride waves while competing for the first time at next month’s World Surfing Games in Biarritz, France.
Four male and two female surfers will represent the People’s Republic of China in the team competition at the International Surfing Association (ISA) flagship event – the sport’s world championships, May 20-28.
"The first-ever Chinese National Surfing Team is ready and will be in Biarritz," International Surfing Association president Fernando Aguerre reveals to Around the Rings. "This is an official team recognized by the Chinese Olympic Committee and funded by the government. It’s the real deal."
The inexperienced surfers are being coached by a former Australian world champion.
"We’ve been working with the Chinese for a few years, but this is the first sign that Olympic surfing is around the corner when you see countries like this now competing," Aguerre said.
Aguerre noted that 28-32 countries on average have participated in the ISA showcase event in the past, a number that will be eclipsed next month in France.
"Maybe we’ll have 40, maybe even 45, but for sure it will be the largest amount of surfing nations in a world championship," said the ISA chief. "It has a lot to do with inclusion in the Olympics."
Renowned for its long, sandy beaches and abundance of surf schools, the southwestern France coastal resort last hosted the surfing world championships in 1980.
Surfing at Tokyo 2020
The Argentine-born surfing president also met with IOC members on Monday in Aarhus as the sport ramps up for its Olympic debut in 2020. He advised that the discussions were predominantly focused on the ISA’s recent venue inspection visit to Chiba Prefecture where Olympic surfing will be contested, the Olympic qualification process and other operational matters.
"We see the IOC is very engaged and there is a lot of excitement with what the new sports are going to bring," Aguerre said, referring to surfing being one of five new sports that were approved for Tokyo 2020 at the IOC session in Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 3.
"Now it’s all about materializing the IOC vision," Aguerre continued. "We’re going to work very hard to make sure the first impression of Olympic surfing is an incredible one and one that maybe make the Olympic Movement think of us as a long-term partner."
ARISF president Re-Elected
Raffaele Chiulli will be serving another four year term as the Association of IOC Recognized International Sport Federations president .
Chiulli was elected by a unanimous vote during the federation’s general assembly in Aarhus, Denmark.
"I am honored and pleased of the confidence and trust that I have received by the 37 International Federations of ARISF which represents a tangible recognition of the hard work jointly carried out for the unity and cooperation with all stakeholders of the sport worldwide," Chiulli said in a statement.
Vice-presdient Anna Arzhanova, secretary general Suasanne Schoedel and board members Riccado Fraccari, Molly Rhone and John Liljelund were also elected at the meeting.
