(ATR) Only five days of competition remain in the Turin Winter Paralympics while Russia and the Ukraine are on top of the medals table with 16 medals. Wednesday competition will have only one event with finals, cross country skiing.

Emily Jansen, 28, will be breaking a record before she even gets onto the slopes - as the first female athlete to compete as part of the Australian Winter Paralympic team.

Australia has won 22 medals in Paralympic winter sport but has never had a female Winter Paralympian, although the land from ?Down Under? has competed in all nine Winter Paralympics since the first in 1976.

After losing her right leg below the knee to cancer in 1997, Jansen, originally took up Wheelchair Basketball. She missed out on selection for the Athens Paralympics but was on a ski trip, when she was spotted by the Australian Paralympic Committee. Six months later, she competed in her first international competition.

At the Torino 2006 Paralympic Winter Games Jansen, will compete in two disciplines, giant slalom and slalom.
