(ATR) Tokyo 2020 will officially become an organizing committee by the beginning of February 2014.

Nao Miyawaki, a spokesperson for Tokyo 2020, confirmed the timetable in an email to Around the Rings, outlining the next major milestones for Tokyo 2020 as it shifts from a bid committee to an organizing committee. The transition should be complete by "the beginning of February."

The committee is still in its infancy and no exact decisions have been made regarding the organizing committee’s structure or leadership. However, Miyawaki did say, "The only thing we know at this moment is that the members of the organizing committee should include representatives from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG), the IOC member from Japan, the JOC president, JOC Secretary General and athletes."

Japan’s IOC member is Tsunekazu Takeda and is expected to play a key role in the organizing committee. He also serves as president of the Japanese Olympic Committee and was president of the Tokyo 2020 bid. Masato Mizuno, the bid’s CEO, is another figure expected to have a leadership role. He also is a vice president of the JOC.

Others who might take leadership roles include Ichiro Kono, chairman of the 2016 bid and Olympic medalist, and Tokyo Governor Naoki Inose.

In November, the IOC will make its first visit to Tokyo.

IOC spokesperson Andrew Mitchell tells ATR the first meeting is the Orientation Seminar, currently scheduled for Nov. 5-8. That date, he said, could change. The IOC usually dedicates an office to work with an organizing committee. Mitchell said that office has not been established yet.

New IOC president Thomas Bach will also have to appoint a Coordination Commission for the 2020 Olympics. It is unclear who might serve as chair. Craig Reedie, who led the evaluation of the 2020 Games, is expected to become World Anti-Doping Agency chairman later this year and is unlikely to serve as Coordination Commission chairman as well.
