The Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch arrives in Murmansk

82 torchbearers ran across the streets of Murmansk, the largest polar town, covering a total distance of 16.7 km. Among the Olympic torchbearers were the winners of the competition organized by the Presenting Partners of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay, the Coca-Cola Company, OSAO "Ingosstrakh" and OAO "Russian Railways".

Among the Olympic torchbearers were the winners of the competition organized by the Presenting Partners of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay, the Coca-Cola Company, OSAO "Ingosstrakh" and OAO "Russian Railways".

The Lantern traveled from Kaliningrad in just three hours. It was about 0°C in Murmansk. A grand welcome took place in the Dolina Uyuta, where the torchbearer Timur Balanin, the honored worker in the field of physical education and sport in Russia, covered his distance to Kolsky Prospect, one of the main town thoroughfares.

Then the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch was passed onto by Sanjin Karabegovic, a volunteer for the Olympic Games in Sarajevo 1984 and a participant in several Olympic Torch Relays. Among the torchbearers were Mumansk natives Evgeny Barakin and Marina Nekrasova and the Honored Master of Sport of the USSR and the participant of the 1956 Olympic Games, the first Games in which Soviet athletes participated. The Olympic Motorcade made a stop by the local office of OSAO "Ingosstrakh", the Presenting Partner of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay.

The torchbearer Sergey Alekseev carried the flame around the Murmansk's main symbol, the monument to the defenders of the Soviet polar region. The statue of a soldier on a seven-meter table, is located on a hilly peak, 173 meters above the city.

It was the Honored Master of Sport in Biathlon, Sergey Rozhkov, who finally lit the Cauldron, presented to the city by the Presenting Partner of the Olympic Torch Relay, OSAO "Ingosstrakh".

Next the Olympic Torch will be transported on carts and karakats to the Arkhangelsk region.
