The AP's Ronald Blum cited a source as saying that the MLBPA "has found agent SCOTT BORAS did not violate union rules when his company made loans to a Dominican prospect." The source said that the union "concluded it had authority over agent matters and that Boras' actions did not break rules in place at that time." Boras' company "made loans worth about $70,000" to SS EDWARD SALCEDO in stages from late '07-09. Boras in an e-mail said, "We are in compliance with MLBPA rules" (AP, 1/3).

Mawae's union position is "sure to propel him into the national spotlight" this year, with the NFL's CBA set to expire in two months. While he "retired in September," he "will work for his former colleagues, even though he won't be earning a paycheck himself." NFLPA Exec Dir DEMAURICE SMITH said Mawae has paid a "huge price for leading the union" (NASHVILLE BUSINESS JOURNAL, 12/31 issue). Meanwhile, Ad Age lists NFL Exec VP & General Counsel JEFF PASH among its "21 People Reshaping Media and Marketing in 2011." Pash is "holding in his hands billions of dollars," as he is "leading negotiations for the NFL -- and, by extension, four TV networks, dozens of corporate sponsors, ad agencies and numerous other businesses associated with the league -- as its" CBA expires (AD AGE, 1/3 issue).
ONE TO WATCH: The L.A. BUSINESS JOURNAL's David Nusbaum writes former MLB player agent DENNIS GILBERT "may be the most well-connected man in baseball you've never heard of." Gilbert last year "led an unsuccessful bid to buy" the Rangers, and he is "still interested in purchasing a team if the circumstances are right." Gilbert discussed his bid for the Rangers, saying, "There was a lot of upside potential, so I put the money together with investors and went after it. It was a fascinating experience and I enjoyed most of the process." When asked if he is still interested in owning a team, Gilbert said, "It depends on the situation. Baseball is my passion. I had support in my Rangers bid from JERRY REINSDORF as well as support from the commissioner's office." Gilbert, a Dodgers fan, declined to comment on the possibility of buying that franchise (L.A.
