In a live webcast Thursday from the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, IOC President Jacques Rogge announced Singapore as the winner over Moscow. International Olympic Committee members cast their votes by post during the past month.
During the bidding phase, Singapore supporters said choosing the small city-state would send a positive signal to other cities that do not have the capacity to host an Olympic Games.
Singapore scored high points for infrastructure and accommodation in a November 2007 evaluation by an IOC panel of experts.
One obstacle began to clear in January when works began on University Town, a new college housing complex tapped to serve as the Athletes Village. In the November report, the IOC highlighted the "risk" of completing a major project in time for the Games. The Singapore central business district is the backdrop of the city's floating stadium, where ceremonies will be held. (ATR)
"We are a young nation and a small city state, but we have built a trusted brand name internationally as a reliable partner, able to get things done, and deliver on what we promise," said Singapore PM Hsien Loong Lee at the University Town groundbreaking ceremony on Jan. 31.
Singapore projects a Games price tag of some $75 million; revenues and costs are achievable and reasonable, the IOC experts wrote.
The Youth Olympic Games Six sports competitions and the media center will be in the International Convention Centre. (ATR) will mark the first time an IOC multi-sport event will be held in Southeast Asia. Bangkok, a past Asian Games and Universiade host, submitted a YOG bid questionnaire, but was dropped when the IOC Executive Board cut the shortlist from five to two candidates in January.
A majority of the IOC members eligible to vote for a host chose Singapore.Members from Russia and Singapore did not vote.
The Games will open on August 14, 2010.
