(ATR) PyeongChang 2018 organizers are juggling options to keep strong winds from becoming a hindrance during ski jumping events.
The Korean Meteorological Administration recorded a wind velocity of 5.3 meters per second at the Alpensia Ski Jumping Center on Feb. 6. If winds like this were to occur regularly during the 2018 Games, it would pose a huge problem.
International Ski Federation (FIS) regulations call for competition to be halted if winds reach 3 meters per second, and cancelled if winds reach 5 meters per second.
According to POCOG vice president Young-jin Kwak, organizers are brainstorming solutions, but have yet to come up with a fix to the problem. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will also provide $5.5 million to solve the issue.
"The organizers and FIS officials are well aware of the wind," Kwak said Friday, according to the Korea Times.
"We have been logging the wind speed in the region and preparing measures countering emergency situations, such as changing the event's schedule."
The $48.9 million venue was completed in 2009, but local broadcaster KBS reported last month that the structure does not meet FIS standards for in-run track and wind resistance.
Monday marks three years until the PyeongChang 2018 opening ceremony.
