FINA Suspends Kuwait

The Kuwait Swimming Association is now suspended by international federation FINA following the IOC suspension of the Kuwaiti Olympic Committee on Jan 1.

FINA made the decision to suspend KSA at a FINA Bureau Meeting that took place last week in Bangkok. The suspension of KSA is a direct result of the IOC suspending the KOC due to excessive government interference in sports. FINA said in a press release that it decided "to temporarily suspend Kuwait Swimming Association from any International Aquatic Activities with the purpose to protect the federation, their officials, coaches and athletes from acts by the Kuwait Government or any governmental or other body as consequences of the constitution, law or other regulations in force in the country."

The Bureau discussed records set using polyurethane swimsuits. The Coaches Commission recommended establishing two sets of records to note the difference between those established with synthetic wear. The Bureau tabled the topic and the Coaches Commission is likely resubmit its proposal later this year.

FINA allowed polyurethane swimsuits starting Feb. 2008. In July 2009, the FINA Congress banned polyurethane swimsuits after a multitude of world records were set at the world championships and Olympics.

During the same meeting that suspended one member, FINA welcomed the Tongo Swimming Association. TSA is the 202nd FINA member.

The Bureau also appointed Japanese Swimming Federation President Kazuo Sano to the fill the vacant VP slot held by the late Hironoshi Furuhashi.

The Bureau also awarded four events. Moscow will host the FINA Synchro Trophy. The 2011 FINA World Junior Men's Water Polo Championships will be held in Greece, while Italy will host the 2011 World Women's Junior Water Polo Championships. Adelaide, Australia will host the 2012 World Junior Diving Championships. Roccione, Italy will host the 2012 FINA World Masters Championships.

Equestrian Not Horsing Around with Injuries

The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) hopes to reduce cross-country horse falls by 10 percent in the next three years.

FEI established the Eventing Risk Management Policy and Action Plan, which will monitor and collect data regarding cross-country event injuries. FEI made the decision at third annual FEI safety meeting held in Malmo, Sweden over the weekend.

Data collected from 2004-2009 show that the percentage of horse falls has decreased from 2.02 percent to 1.73 percent despite an increase in completion.

"The Eventing Risk Management Policy and Action Plan is a major step towards ensuringthat our horses and riders are not exposed to unnecessary risk in what is inherently a risk sport," FEI Secretary General Alex McLin. "In the past there has been a tendency just to count the accidents, but we need to be more proactive and count all the near-misses too. It's all part of a cultural shift in the mindset of the sport. Education is key."

Oldest Rowing Medalist Dies

Bert Bushnell, the oldest rowing medalist died last week. He was 88.

Bushnell won the double sculls event at the London Olympics in 1948 competing for England. He had trained in the single sculls but failed to qualify for singles. Bushnell began to train with Richard Burnell in the doubles and eventually qualified for the Games.

His family owned a boatyard in Wargrave, England, but could not work in the family business to preserver his status as an amateur athlete. The Olympics at that time were a strictly amateur event.

Bushnell donated his medal to the River and Rowing Museum in his native Henley-on-Thames.
