Rio De Janeiro the Expert at Pan Am Debrief
A six-day debriefing in Rio De Janeiro this week puts the Brazilian city in the role of an expert, sharing its experience from the 2007 Pan American Games with five cities with upcoming multi-sport games.
All are from the Americas, such as Guadalajara, host of the 2011 Pan Ams, along with 2010 Commonwealth Games host Delhi.
The debriefing is the first in the history of the Pan Ams and is said to be modeled upon the debrief organized by the IOC after Olympic Games.
Speaking at the opening of the debrief, Brazilian minister of sports Orlando Silva Jr. said the debrief shows how Rio De Janeiro is on course to stage the Olympics.
“It is a demonstration of maturity and planning for us to win the bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games,” Silva is quoted in a release from Rio 2016.
Brazilian President Launches Infrastructure Development
Brazilian President Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva has launched a $670 million project to upgrade Rio de Janeiro’s infrastructure. The Plan for Growth Acceleration, as it is called, will focus on Complexo do Alemao, Manguinhos and Rocinha areas, places that are in need of social improvement.
"The PAC is an investment for the development, education, health, sport and leisure for the 'cariocas', people of Rio Janeiro" said President Lula in a statement.
"Rio de Janeiro will undergo an authentic revolution with new constructions that will be implemented as part of the Plan for Growth Acceleration and for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. With the commitment of the three levels of Government, Federal, State and City, and the experience gained with the organization XV Pan American Games, Rio de Janeiro gives authentic demonstrations that the City is actively getting prepared to welcome the Olympic Games and to captivate the world with an unforgettable celebration for the whole Olympic Movement", said Brazilian Olympic Committee president Carlos Arthur Nuzman.
Spanish Elections Stay the Course for Madrid Olympic Bid
The re-election of the Spanish government of Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero will mean no changes for the bid from Madrid for the 2016 Games.
Zapatero and his Socialist Party were victorious in the March 9 vote, although short of claiming an absolute majority in the parliament.
A Madrid 16 official says the victory would appear to confirm that the bid will keep the “personal and absolute commitment” that Zapatero has expressed during the election campaign.
New Sports Hospital in Doha
The Doha 2016 Olympic bid chairman Hassan Ali Bin Ali welcomes the opening of a hospital specializing in sports medicine in Doha.
"This new sports medicine hospital is a great addition to the already world class sporting infrastructure that we are proud to have in Doha" he said. "The completion of this new facility emphasizes yet again how committed Doha is in its Bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016. I know that it will be a huge asset, not only to sport in Doha, but also in the region and potentially in the wider world."
The hospital will have comprehensive diagnostics, treatment, rehabilitation and physiotherapy services associated with sports injuries and the ability to treat as many as 300 patients a day.
According to Doha 2016, the new hospital is located in the centre of the bid’s plan for "rapid treatment of sports injuries immediately on site if they are sustained during the Olympic competitions".
Doha 2016 also claims that the hospital could host a WADA accredited drug testing laboratory by 2010.
Chicago Committed to Women
Travelling to Jordan last weekend for the 4th IOC Women and Sports Conference was Lori T. Healey, chief of staff for Mayor Richard Daley. Healey says with women holding 60 percent of the posts at City Hall, she says there is no doubt about the city’s commitment to opportunities for women.
Healey also says she believes that when she returns to Chicago, it would not be out of the realm for the mayor to ask her to explore the possibility of the city hosting the next IOC Women and Sport Conference.
