JAL is the biggest carrier in the Asian Pacific, serving 213 airports in 33 countries and regions.

Takaya says Tokyo has a single level of sponsorship. JAL becomes the sixth corporate sponsor for the Japanese bid.

Brazil NOC in Charge of Aquatic Center

The Rio de Janiero city government turned over the management of the aquatic center built for the 2007 Pan American Games Monday to the Brazilian Olympic Committee.

The Maria Lenk Aquatic Center is one of the major venues included in the proposal from the city for the 2016 Olympics. Lenk was the first woman to swim in the Olympics for Brazil and South America, competing at the 1932 and 1936 Games.

"This is a live legacy from the Pan American Games, and it is extremely important for the Rio 2016 bid,” said Carlos Arthur Nuzman, COB and Rio 2016 Bid Committee president.

“The Aquatic Center is included in the questionnaire delivered to IOC and, by taking on its management, the Brazilian Olympic Committee demonstrates the Rio 2016 bid commitment to the Olympic Movement. For the Brazilian sports, Rio 2016 is already a reality,"

The first event organized under the auspices of the COB will be the Brazilian Swimming Olympic Trials from May 6 to 10.

The COB and the Rio De Janeiro city government are discussing the transfer of the Rio Velodrome, another 2007 Pan Am venue. The buildings will become the Brazilian Olympic Training Center if Rio doesn't receive the 2016 bid.

Mayors Support Chicago Bid

Mayors from the area surrounding Chicago have formed a 2016 Regional Coordinating Committee to organize their involvement in the bid for the 2016 Games.

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley says he needs the support and enthusiasm of the city’s neighbors to bring successful Games back to the U.S.

“The Olympic Games presents the Midwest region with a unique opportunity to generate international good will, create new businesses and jobs and attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to our region,” said Batavia Mayor Jeffery D. Schielke.

Gebrselassie Excited About Madrid 2016 Bid

Marathon world record holder Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia said Madrid could organize a successful summer Games by next year.

“Here everything is wonderful, both the quality of the air and the people, who really love sports. I have no doubt that Madrid can organize the Games and I support this attempt. I hope that Madrid will have it,” said Gebrselassie in a statement issued by Madrid 16.

India Ex-Pats Support Doha

Indian expatriates in Doha will support the 2016 bid by organizing cultural programs and a community run on March 28 at the Khalifa Stadium.

“The 200,000 strong Indian community in Qatar feels very proud of the achievements of Qatar and wants to express its whole-hearted support for the Doha 2016 bid. We expect more than 4,000 participants for the run,” Dr. Mohan Thomas, chairman of the organizing committee, told the Gulf Times.
