(ATR) - Sports leaders and government officials in India say the successful staging of the first Afro-Asian Games shows that the country is ready to host even bigger events, such as the Commonwealth Games or the Olympics.
The eight-day, eight-sport event ended in Hyderabad Nov. 1 in a cascade of fireworks and thousands of performers on the stadium infield. China led the medals table, followed by India.
This debut for the Afro-Asian Games drew about 2,000 athletes from 97 countries. The 2007 games will be held in Africa, but a host city has not been selected.
