The Ministry of Education and the Government of Magdalena have decided to take measures to mitigate the risks posed by armed clashes in the Sierra Nevada area, apparently between the Armed Forces and paramilitary groups.

That is why the authorities decided to resume the virtual modality for students of the Cerro Blanco Departmental Educational Institution. The Governor of Magdalena, Carlos Caicedo, announced a “day of safe alternation”, so that teachers, the school's governing body, students and parents can resume classes remotely.

The notification was made for the three headquarters of the educational institution, which are located in the El reposo village, Julio Zawady district, in the Banana Zone. The secretary of education in charge of Magdalena, Lorena Martínez López, held a conversation with the school whose purpose was to coordinate how teachers could continue with academic activities virtually.

According to a statement issued by the Secretariat and the Government, students will be accompanied by telephone and e-mail, and, for those children who do not have an internet connection, they will be given guides that they will develop in person, so they will be accompanied by the public forces.

These measures were also supported by the pronouncements of the Office of the Ombudsman, made following a humanitarian visit to the area. There, they evidenced violations of human rights due to forced displacement, especially in the rural area of the municipality of Ciénaga. The visit was attended by the ombudsman, Carlos Camargo, who verified with his team the presence of explosive devices in different parts of the access road to villages such as La Secreta and La Unión.

The president of the subdirective of educators of the Banana Zone, Asdrúbal Mojica Parejo, stated in the governor's statement:

These measures, which will be implemented in conjunction with the Armed Forces, will be carried out in tandem with the authorities confronting the insurgents. The commander of the First Division of the Army, Major General Gerardo Melo Becerra, assured that they will bring peace to the area again, for this, he committed himself with the community to go once a month “to verify the development of the campaign aimed at stabilizing that sector. Believe in your army, report these criminals.” He added that the area is controlled and, in addition, he invited members of the armed groups to avail themselves of the demobilization programs.

The governor of the department, Carlos Caicedo, published a video alluding to the accompaniment he is doing, together with the authorities, for families displaced by the fighting to return to their territories. He also emphasized that Santa Marta was issuing alerts since 2019, therefore, he asked for a greater presence of the national government.

Together with the commander of the first division of the army, Gerardo Melo, yesterday we made presence in the village the Secret Corrg of Siberia to ensure the return of the families displaced by the clashes between the Pachencas-Gulf Clan paramilitaries.
