On the night of this Thursday, April 21, Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, the Mexican ambassador to the state of Texas, in the United States, reported that he had written a letter to Governor Greg Abbott with the request for executive clemency for Melissa Elizabeth Lucio.
The woman of Mexican descent was sentenced to death in 2008 after being found guilty for the murder of her 2-year-old daughter, Mariah Elizabeth Alvarez, making her the first Latin American woman to receive this sentence in Texas since the death penalty was restored in 1976.
“I am sending a letter to Governor @GregAbbott_TX granting executive clemency to Melissa Elizabeth Lucio, who is sentenced to death in Texas. Mexico has historically shown an unchanging commitment to its opposition to the death penalty,” Moctezuma Barragán wrote.
