After having played 28 matches wearing the Napoli jersey, Freddy Rincón was called by Jorge Valdano, then Real Madrid coach, to reinforce the midfield of the 'merengue' team. The Vallecaucano barely managed to score 21 matches, 13 of them as a starter, and managed to score a single goal.

In the early hours of this Monday, April 11, the former Colombian midfielder suffered a major accident in Cali after colliding with a MIO bus. It is currently in a critical and reserved condition. After this event, Jorge Valdano, in an interview for the AS newspaper, spoke about the 'Colosso'.

“I received the news through the media and since then I have been waiting. First of all, I accompany the family in their concern, sent an affectionate greeting to them. As for Freddy, we must trust that his athletic ability will help him get out of this drama. I hope that soon we will be able to enjoy their energy again,” he began by saying.

On the other hand, the 1986 World Cup champion in Mexico recalled how Freddy Rincón arrived at Real Madrid. In addition, he confessed that he had been following him for his matches in the Colombian national team, which at that time was led by Francisco Maturana.

“Freddy came when I was a coach. It was a relatively easy operation because the player's will was total. I was very attentive to the revolutionary cycle of Pacho Maturana and Freddy was one of the most attractive and unbalanced players in that team. He came to Madrid at a time of great institutional crisis and Freddy paid him as a player, just as I paid him as a coach,” Valdano said.

In the same way, Jorge Valdano highlighted the values of the Colombian. He also explained that he regrets that the Colombian could not shine at Real Madrid or show his great conditions. And he also assured that if Rincón were part of current football, he could easily become a figure in any elite team in the world due to his great physique and talent.

I have left Freddy's human quality and a sense of frustration because Madridismo did not enjoy it to its full potential. Football is becoming very physical and that is a territory in which Freddy took a lot of advantage. For the rest, talent is valid at any time and Freddy had plenty of it”, he concluded for the AS newspaper.
