What happened before the events of It? An upcoming prequel for television promises to delve into the past of horror and will come exclusively through the HBO Max catalog. This series will be set in the 1960s under the title of Welcome to Derry, a name that alludes to an origin story. The purpose of this new project by Warner Bros. will be to tell the events before the film It: Part One (2017), which was based on the original novel by the acclaimed writer Stephen King.

According to close sources consulted by Variety, the production is in development under the executive production of Andy Muschietti, the filmmaker behind the two installments of It, along with Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. It was also confirmed that the aforementioned were responsible for capturing the history of television fiction and Fuchs was also in charge of writing the script. Muschietti will be the director of the pilot.

The 2017 film adapted the writer's novel, and had among its stars Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, Nicholas Hamilton and Jackson Robert Scott. (Warner Bros.)

Welcome to Derry will occur two decades before the film based on the horror book published in 1986, when the plot was staged. That is, we will now travel to the 60s and come across a different city (more conservative and ancient), as well as the origins of Pennywise, played by Bill Skarsgård, in both parts of the modern adaptation. For now, it is not confirmed that the actor will return to his terrifying role.

The overwhelming success of It in the cinema

In the 90s, King's story had also been covered in the world of flesh and blood with a TV miniseries — divided into two parts — for the ABC channel and with the classic performance of Tim Curry as the creepy clown. It: Part One was released several years later and, together with It: Part 2 (2019), they raised a total box office of 1.1 billion dollars globally and became a highly successful franchise in modern cinema.

Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, Nicholas Hamilton and Jackson Robert Scott formed the first cast in the 2017 live-action. Actors James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Jay Ryan, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa, James Ransone and Andy Bean later joined the characters to life as adults.

The next series that will precede the plot of It on the big screen would not summon any of these stars, because it happens before the original events. For this reason, the cast chosen for this new television production is expected to be completely new. HBO Max has not yet officially confirmed the release of this title, so we will have to wait for a definitive release date to be announced on the streaming platform.
