While in most cases people with heart failure can go on vacation, it is important to take some precautions before embarking on a trip.

Ilse Janicke, head of the Duisburg Heart Center in western Germany, lists six points to consider:

- Heart patients are eligible to travel if their symptoms have not changed in the last four weeks. “The patient should be able to walk 50 meters on flat ground or climb ten to twelve steps without discomfort,” Janicke said.

- It is advisable to have a cardiological check-up about four or six weeks before going on vacation to assess the general state of health. In addition, some necessary measures can be taken beforehand, such as requesting assistance at the airport or preparing an additional oxygen supply during the flight.

- If you travel to the mountains, you have to be patient. If heart patients want to spend an active vacation, for example skiing or hiking, they should plan three or four days to acclimatize to the altitude. Only then will they be able to test their bodies.

- Many remedies for the heart cause the skin to be more sensitive to sunlight. Therefore, patients should use sun protection, if possible, greater than 30.

- Cardiac patients should also drink enough fluid, as many heart medications have a dehydrating effect. If to this is added traveler's diarrhea or intense heat at the destination of the holiday, the body quickly becomes dehydrated, which can be dangerous.

- Each trip comes with its own challenges, because the climate, the local health care and the duration of the trip can be very different depending on the destination. In order to develop an individual plan, Janicke advises you to have a travel medical check-up and receive specific advice.
