The two accused of the Samaniego massacre in 2020 sentenced to 29 years in prison

On the afternoon of Friday, March 25, the Attorney General of the Nation, Francisco Barbosa, announced the conviction of two of the perpetrators of the Samaniego massacre, Nariño, in August 2020.

The Prosecutor stated that thanks to the work of prosecutors and investigators, it was possible to conclude that Andrés Fernando Moriano, alias Fercho and Yeiron Alexander Pantoja Rodríguez, alias Conductor, participated in this multiple homicide that occurred in the village of Santa Catalina in the municipality of Samaniego.

It should be recalled that in this massacre, which occurred at a time when such events began to be very common in different parts of the country, eight young people aged between 19 and 27, as well as one minor, died.

According to the investigation carried out by the Attorney General's Office, on the day of the incident the two convicts, along with several armed men, arrived in hoods at a farm located in the Santa Catalina village, rural area of Samaniego, where about 30 young people were leaving.

Once on site, highly armed criminals began shooting at those who were departing on the spot. In those events, the hooded men caused the death of eight young men.

Alias Fercho and alias Conductor were found responsible for the crimes of aggravated homicide in heterogeneous competition; concert to commit an aggravated crime, and the manufacture, trafficking and carrying of weapons, ammunition for restricted use for the exclusive use of the armed forces or explosives.

According to the Attorney General's Office, the two men were sentenced to 29 years in prison and a fine of 1,550 statutory monthly minimum wages in force.

Five people with arrest warrants since 2020

The investigating body also assured that from the moment the complaint of the massacre in Samaniego, Nariño, was known, work in the field and collection of evidence was carried out; thanks to that, in October 2020, the Prosecutor's Office managed to issue five arrest warrants against the criminals identified as Archangel Machado Lopez, Kevin Alexander Bastidas Quiroz, Andres Fernando Moriano Caicedo Fercho, Oscar Ferney Martinez Zambrano and Yeiron Alexander Pantoja Rodriguez aka Mono or Conductor.

According to the information of the watchdog, in the course of the work carried out by the corresponding authorities to capture the accused, Kevin Alexander Bastidas Quiroz and Oscar Ferney Martínez Zambrano were found dead, so there was a preclusion for the deaths of the two defendants.

During his visit to Valledupar, where Francisco Barbosa made this announcement, he also pointed out that thanks to the articulated work between the Prosecutor's Office, Police and Military Forces, there are 43 days without massacres in the country. In addition, in the department of Nariño, it is noted that 103 days have gone without these multiple homicides.

The Samaniego Massacre

On August 15, 2020, at 9:30 in the evening, several hooded men arrived at a farm in the village of Santa Catalina, in the municipality of Samaniego, Nariño, where at least 30 young people were enjoying a celebration, many of them university students who had returned to the region due to the suspension of the classes motivated by the covid-19 pandemic.

One of the survivors told Semana magazine that the men, who wore black vests, assault rifles and automatic pistols, locked up most of the women and forced the men to lie on the ground, face down.

According to the survivor's testimony, the killers chose three of the boys, took them to the center of the place where they were talking before the attack, brought them to their knees and shot them at close range.

The first to die, according to the witness's account, were 25-year-old Byron Danilo Patiño, who had just finished his career as a public accountant; later, Brayan Alexis Cuarán, also 25, who wanted to be a professional footballer, and Daniel Steven Vargas Jurado, 22, and a student of Radiology.

Rubén Darío Ibarra (23 years old, nursing student), Campo Elián Benavides (high school student, age 17), Oscar Andrés Obando (age 24, student of Sports Administration); Laura Mishel Melo Riascos (age 19, medical student) and Jhon Sebastián Quintero (23, student of Administration of Products).

According to the survivor's account, before leaving, the murderers took the women out of the room where they had been locked up and ordered them all to run, some escaped among the vegetation, and others even threw themselves into the waters of the Pacual River, which passes 50 meters from the site.
