The Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) designated today Thursday, March 24 as the date of appearance that Senator-elect Piedad Córdoba has to make on the information she has on the assassination of Álvaro Gómez Hurtado, after the peace court reviewed the guardianship filed by the relatives of the a conservative leader, who claimed that their rights as victims had been violated because they were not allowed to attend live and live the first hearing given by the congresswoman of the Historical Pact.

One of the arguments that had the most weight in the determination of the special court was the quality of victims of the members of the family of the conservative leader. Judge Alejandro Ramelli was the one who stated that victims' rights should take precedence over the JEP; a position supported by jurists Raúl Eduardo Sánchez and Gustavo Salazar. Against were Maria del Pilar Valencia and Reinere Jaramillo.

But in a recent document presented by Álvaro Hurtado's nephew and candidate for president by the Salvation Movement, Enrique Gómez, he requested that the hearing of Piedad Córdoba be suspended until the end of the election campaign.

According to the right-wing candidate, being present in the Cordoba proceedings before the JEP could be frowned upon and bring media inconveniences in the upcoming contest on April 29.

“The confluence of the previous conditions, which occurred after the filing of the guardianship that gave rise to the new date for diligence, would be inappropriate in the judicial setting, could be given to misinterpretations or generate media attention that has no place in a procedure of this nature”, noted in the document.

He also indicated that due to the commitments of the nature of his campaign he could not have time, noting that at today's hearing he could not attend because of the forum “We need to talk”. Therefore, he extended the request that these hearings be suspended until the electoral contests pass “so that the subscriber can act in representation of the interests of the investigation carried out by the assassination of Álvaro Gómez Hurtado and José del Cristo Huertas Hastamorir”.

About Congresswoman Piedad Córdoba, it became known that recently the request for extradition against her brother Álvaro was formalized because of links with drug trafficking. the United States Government announced that it had sent the formal request to Colombia for the extradition of Álvaro Fredy Córdoba, brother of Piedad Córdoba, a senator elected by the Historical Pact.

Córdoba is required for alleged links with drug trafficking cartels. On the day of his arrest, on February 2, two more people were apprehended, Alvaro Alonso Jaramillo and Libya Amanda Palacio Mena, alias Amanda, a travel agency worker.

That operation was named Operation Choral by the Colombian authorities and was given in response to a request from the Court of the Southern District of New York. That court accuses Álvaro Fredy Córdoba and the other two detainees of entering more than five kilos of cocaine and carrying weapons illegally. Specifically, they are accused of conspiracy.

In addition, the three unionies could face terrorism charges if it is found that drug transport benefits Mexican cartels and FARC dissidents, led by Miguel Botache Santillana, alias Gentil Duarte.

The decision will be communicated to Mr. Córdoba in his cell, located in a high security ward of La Picota prison. With no charges in Colombia, extradition could take place in the next few days.
