Brussels, 24 Mar The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, said today that the “victory” of the war in Ukraine will be decided in the next two weeks and called on the Twenty-Seven to continue supplying arms to Kiev. “The next two weeks are going to decide on which side the victory will fall. And we must continue to help, by supplying arms,” Borrell said at the entrance to a European Council dedicated to Ukraine in which, in addition to the leaders of the Twenty-Seven, the President of the United States, Joe Biden is invited. The coordinator of the Community's foreign policy assured that Russian forces are suffering “a great military failure” in Ukraine. “The Russians tried a quick conquest and now they are massacring people. From a military point of view, it is a great failure for Russia. A month of fighting and they have not been able to move more than 200 kilometers from their logistics bases,” he said. According to Borrell, this inability of Vladimir Putin's forces to gain ground in Ukraine and control large cities is causing the Moscow attack to seek devastation. “Since they cannot conquer cities, they bomb them, killing innocents and destroying everything. But the Ukrainians are fighting and we are helping them, supplying them with weapons and the result of the war is certainly not what the Kremlin expected. They can have a big defeat. We will continue to support Ukraine, we will continue to put pressure on Russia,” he added. The Spanish Social Democrat added that the summit of European leaders will discuss the possibility of extending sanctions against Russia, which has already been punished by four packages of sanctions in areas such as the closure of airspace for its aircraft, the freezing of funds and assets of politicians, the military and oligarchs or the freezing of the reserves of the Russian central bank in western territory. Borrell expressed his confidence that the European Council this afternoon will discuss and approve new “personal and sectoral sanctions”.
