A van with seven burned bodies was located in the municipality of Celaya, in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, local authorities reported Wednesday.
Celaya authorities received the report Tuesday night of a van on fire in the community of San José el Nuevo to Rincón de Tamayo, located in the south of this municipality of Guanajuato.
When they arrived, firefighters and policemen discovered that there were seven burned bodies in the vehicle.
The executive secretary of the State Public Security System of the state, Sophia Huett López, reported that the van had a license plate of the neighboring state of Michoacán and had a report of theft in that entity.
In addition, he indicated that the victims of this crime have not yet been identified. “The Prosecutor's Office will have to review who these people were and where they came from. For now, there is no indication to determine that they were local people,” he said.
The central state of Guanajuato, until 2021, was the state with the highest number of intentional homicides in the country after the end of the year with 3,516 victims of this crime.
However, in the first two months of 2022 it fell to second place, with 477 cases, just below the state of Michoacán, which accumulated 484 murders.
In the case of the municipality of Celaya, in the first two months of the year, it ranked as the fifth most murdered Mexican city, with 71, which represents an increase of 24.5 per cent compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Ministry of Citizen Security and Protection of the Government of Mexico.
Mexico recorded 33,308 homicides in 2021 after the two most violent years in its history, under Andrés Manuel López Obrador, with 34,690 murder victims in 2019 and 34,554 in 2020.
The country is also experiencing a crisis of missing persons, with more than 99,000 Mexicans not located from 1964 to date, as recognized by the National Search Commission (CNB) of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob).
