Spain's Paula Badosa took another step forward in her defense of the Indian Wells title on Tuesday by beating Canadian Leylah Fernández, runner-up in the United States Open, in the round of 16.
Badosa, seventh in the WTA ranking, imposed her experience against young Fernández (21) to take the game 6-4 and 6-4 in one hour and 42 minutes at the center court of Indian Wells (California).
Fernández, from an Ecuadorian father, came to the duel with greater wear after two demanding weeks of competition and finishing a fierce third-round crossing on Monday night.
On the other hand, Badosa continues to show extraordinary strength in Indian Wells where, without giving up a set yet, she aspires to be the first tennis player to revalidate her title in the last three decades.
In the fourth quarter, the Spaniard will face the winner of the cross between Russia's Veronika Kudermetova (24) and Czech Marketa Vondrousova (33).
