Pfizer and BioNTech announced on Tuesday that they have requested the U.S. Drug Administration (FDA) to approve additional booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines for people over 65 years of age.
The company stated in a statement that it was based on Israeli data and analyzed when the ommicron variant was widely released.
According to Pfizer and BioNTech, the data show that “an additional booster dose of the messenger RNA vaccine increases immunogenicity” (its ability to induce an immune response) and “reduces the rate of confirmed infection and serious illness”.
Therefore, the company applied to the FDA for emergency use approval.
