On August 4, 2021, the Mexican government filed a lawsuit against the top 10 weapons manufacturers in the District Court of Massachusetts, claiming a negligent act and knowing that their products were illegally trafficked and supplied by criminal groups.

The lawsuit was filed against manufacturers such as Smith and Wesson, Century Arms, Colt Manufacturing, Glock, Luger, and Barrett, while the 0.50 caliber sniper rifle was a war weapon used by drug cartels.

On December 22, the UN Security Council approved a resolution on arms trafficking submitted by Mexico, which condemned the distribution of weapons to non-state actors, resulting in supply and reaffirmed the threat posed by small arms and light weapons to international peace and security.
