Spaniard Rafael Nadal defeated Britain's Daniel Evans in two sets on Monday and sealed his way to the round of 16 of the Indian Wells Masters 1000, where he is the big favorite to win after the fall of Daniil Medvedev.

Nadal expands his unbeatable performance this season to 17 matches, the best start of his career at age 35, and celebrates his 400th victory in Master 1000 tournaments.

The tennis player with the most Grand Slam titles in history (21) beat Daniel Evans (29 of the ATP) 7-5 and 6-3 in an hour and 43 minutes of play at the center court in Indian Wells (California).

The Spaniard took the court just after Medvedev's fall to Gael Monfils, which meant that the Russian lost his three-week ATP number one status.

The lead will return to Serbian Novak Djokovic, absent from Indian Wells due to his refusal to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

With his main rival out of the way, Nadal faced a completely different clash than his debut against the young American Sebastian Korda, against which he had to overcome a 2-5 disadvantage in the final set.

Against Evans, the Spaniard also needed to overcome an early loss of service but he was back on track in time to take the first set 7-5 and seal the pass in a more placid way.

“I didn't play well at first but I was getting better little by little,” acknowledged the Spaniard. “It's an important victory against a difficult opponent.”

“He plays very well tactically and is aggressive changing pace in points. I'm glad I saved that difficult moment in the first set, then things went a little better,” he congratulated himself.

Nadal maintains a perfect pace this season, with three trophies including the Australian Open, where he managed to lift two sets against Medvedev in the final.

With that victory he reached 21 Grand Slam titles in his record, beating Djokovic and Roger Federer in that race.

His next rival in the round of 16 of Indian Wells, a tournament he has won three times, will be the winner of the match between Canadian Denis Shapovalov and American Reilly Opelka.
