The Executive Board of World Triathlon has met this Thursday to discuss the most recent updates regarding events, the situation of the member National Federations and upcoming Congress, as well as following up on ongoing discussions over the future of the organization, including rebranding options and races resuming in the fall.
The Board approved new dates for two World Cups that were previously postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, with Karlovy vary World Cup now taking place on September 12-13, 2020 and Chengdu World Cup the following week, on September 19-20, 2020. This events will now be included in the World Triathlon calendar, as well as the WTS Hamburg and Mixed Relay World Championships, announced this week to take place on September 4-5, 2020. These events will not be included in the Olympic qualification rankings. These events will not count for the Olympic qualification rankings or the World Triathlon rankings.
"We are conscious that the situation is different in almost every country, and we are working together with organisers, Continental Confederations, national Federations, athletes and coaches to try to resume activities and events as soon as it is feasible, so it is great to start seeing some events being added to the calendar after the summer", said World Triathlon President and IOC member, Marisol Casado. "We will continue working to ensure that we can provide our athletes and our members opportunities to race, always considering when is safe and fair to do so", she expressed.
The Executive Board continued to work on the different proposals, schedules and options for the rebranding of the organization, and discussed the possibilities for the upcoming Congress and Elections, planned for November 2020, including the possibility of allowing a hybrid session, with members not able to travel because of the current situation being able to participate in Congress and Elections virtually.
