The two main football governing bodies, FIFA and UEFA have decided in unison to suspend all Russian teams from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice.
FIFA had earlier banned Russia from the upcoming World Cup in Qatar later this year, while UEFA had pulled their Champions League final from St. Petersburg and kicked Spartak Moscow out of their Europa League tournament.
The football federations of Sweden, Poland and the Czech Republic earlier announced they would refuse to play Russia in any World Cup qualifier scheduled for March 24 and 29.
The statement from FIFA said, “football is united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine. Both presidents hope the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people.”
