(ATR) The latest bid of Jaca, Spain for the Winter Olympics will include the capital of the Aragon region, the ancient city of Zaragoza, Spanish bid leaders tell Around the Rings at the 2014 Information Seminar in Lausanne hosted by the IOC.
"We want to make a bid that can win," says Antonio Fernandez Arimany, a veteran of the Madrid bid, who is working in an informal capacity with Jaca.
Fernandez says Zaragoza, with a population of 600,000, offers a better place for the ice events of the Games and more plentiful accommodations than the village of Jaca, 120 km to the north.
Ski events would be held in Jaca, which would also be the site of an Olympic Village.
Carlos Martin, another Madrid 2012 official working with Jaca, says Jaca's potential as a ski venue should not be overlooked. He notes that the Winter World University Games have been held twice in the Pyrenees resort, which will also host the 2007 edition of the Winter European Youth Olympic Festival.
He says another impetus for including Zaragoza is the city's status as the host of the 2008 World Expo. New facilties and hotels being built for the Expo could serve an Olympic bid as well, says Martin.
Although it's 360km from Madrid, Zaragoza and Jaca will soon be served by a new high-speed rail link.
