Pardon Brazilians for tuning out the Pan American Games Sunday.
The men’s volleyball team won the 2007 FIVB World League championship over Russia in a match carried live on Brazilian TV from Poland. It was Brazil’s fifth straight title and seventh all-time.
Then the Brazil senior men’s soccer team beat Argentina 3-0 in Venezuela for its eighth Copa America championship. The South American soccer championship began in 1916 and is the world’s oldest international soccer championship. Among the dignitaries at the final was FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
Instead of putting on T-shirts declaring themselves champions after the final whistle, the Brazilians covered their trademark gold jerseys with blue shirts promoting Brazil’s bid to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The Globo TV Copa America telecast included halftime Pan Am highlights and a post-game interview with newly minted Pan American Games’ taekwondo champion Diogo Silva.
Judging by the reaction of fans in one beachside eatery in Rio’s Barra district, the Pan Am newsbreaks were convenient times for trips to the washroom or outside for a cigarette.
Medal Count
Diogo Silva’s gold medal in taekwondo was the first for the host nation at the XV Pan American Games. Silva beat Peter Lopez of Peru in the 68 kg division Sunday.
The U.S., leading the medals table, took the gold in both men’s and women’s triathlon Sunday at Copacabana, men’s BMX and the dressage event at Deodoro Stadium at the National Equestrian Center.
As the third day of Pan Am Games opens, the USA leads the medal table with 18, followed by Mexico and Canada with 8 and Cuba and Colombia with 5. The U.S. has nine gold medals so Diogo Silva with Brazil’s first gold medal of the Pan American Games. (ANTONIO SCORZA/AFP/Getty Images)far.
