(London) – For the first time in Olympic history, every country competing in London 2012 will have female athletes on its team.
P&G and Around the Rings will pay homage to all female competitors at an event on Saturday, August 4, at Africa House in Kensington Gardens.
"It is fitting that five days into the London 2012 Olympics, it was women who won Great Britain’s first gold medals," said Publisher Sheila S. Hula. "They’ve come so far since the 1948 London Games when Fanny Blankers-Koen – a 30-year-old mother of two from Holland -- was criticized for ‘running in short pants when she should stay at home’. She went on to win four gold medals, and became the most successful athlete of those Games."
Standa Vecera, P&G Vice President of South & East Africa comments, "We are proud to be part of Around the Rings and Africa House event that honours women in sport. We recognise the important role that women play in society, the economy, sports and beyond and we are committed to continue touching and improving their lives not only through our products, but also by supporting & inspiring the next generation to participate in sport."
Africa Village marks the first time the 53 National Olympic Committees of Africa coming together under one official Olympic House.
"We created Africa Village to offer the public, the National Olympic Committees and African athletes a unique opportunity to fully participate in the Olympic festivities, whatever their means. This area will act as an exceptional showcase for our continent in the eyes of the general public, the eight million visitors during the Games and also decision-makers from around the world," said Intendant Lassana Palenfo, president of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa.
